Mexico now close to the knockout round after beating France by 2-0 at the World Cup on Thursday, 17th of June 2010. Goals each by Hernandez & Blanco has ramped up Mexico to the next round with only a draw in their next match with South Africa.
Hernandez ran onto Rafael Marquez’s pass and rounded goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before guiding the ball home in the 64th minute while Blanco converted a penalty in the 79th minute.
Mexico shares the same 4 points currently with Uruguay. France has to beat South Africa and hope Mexico and Uruguay don’t draw their match in Tuesday’s final group games.
“We’re not going to go out of this tournament without winning a match,” France winger Florent Malouda said. “It’s shameful to lose like that. It’s a question of saving our honour.”
For France coach Raymond Domenech, it seems like a case of the 2008 European Championship all over again, with a scoreless draw followed by a defeat, and his controversial six years as coach could end in more embarrassment.

Innovative match balls, jersey & soccer boots specially for FIFA, World Cup 2010.
Adidas, the official sponsor of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will use the world’s biggest sporting stage to introduce innovative products to the game, extend market leadership, celebrate players and federations and inspire soccer fans across the United States and around the world.
All action shall be set around the Official Match Ball titled ‘Jabulani’ innovated by Adidas, which means “to celebrate” in South African dialect isiZulu.
“The adidas match ball is a celebration of the game and the host country featuring 11 colors representing 11 players in every team, 11 official languages of South Africa and 11 South African tribes,” said Antonio Zea, soccer business unit director, adidas America. “It’s also all about innovation to improve performance. With only eight thermally bonded panels, the least of any soccer ball ever, the Jabulani is the most accurate and roundest ball.”
That doesn’t end. Innovated only for the finals on July 2011 is the Jo’bulani, named as a tribute to the host city of the final, Johannesburg, or Jo’burg as it is commonly referred to. Designed in white and gold, the Jo’bulani is a compliment to both the color of the 2010 FIFA World Cup trophy and Johannesburg, the “City of Gold.”
For the first time ever, players will have two Federation Kit options – adidas TECHFIT PowerWeb or ForMotion. TECHFIT PowerWeb is compression apparel designed to improve speed, power, endurance and vertical jump. Many players already wear TECHFIT under their uniforms to improve performance, but this is the first time the TECHFIT technology will be incorporated into the actual jersey.

World Cup Soccer experienced US referees the last time in 2002, with Brian Hall. For 2 years before the leading World Cup, Brian Hall exercised for 4 hours almost every day. He lifted weights, jogged, did interval training and monitored his heart rate while holding a day job. Hall had one goal: ‘to make it to the World Cup as a referee’. “It is not an easy task competing with the best players in the world,” said Hall, who was a referee in two 2002 World Cup games, about keeping pace.
Referees, who could be twice the age of the footballers, sprint across the field keeping up with the players and closely tracking the action. They tend to run about 12 miles during the game, about twice more than the players, according to U.S. Soccer Federation.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup shall begin from June 11 in South Africa amidst 32 teams across the globe. The journey to becoming a referee in the world’s biggest sports event is physically demanding. FIFA, the governing body that oversees the tournament, sets rigorous fitness requirements for its World Cup referees in a weed-out process that began three years ago unlike the elite soccer players who have a cadre of trainers and specialists, most of the referees have day jobs, like teaching or office work, and must find their own time to train.
Along with the physical demands, the paid referees also deal with mind games on the field. They scrutinize the theatrics; hear the tirades and tantrums of players. They also make crucial decisions knowing that every call will be second-guessed by millions of screaming fans, pundits and TV cameras.
They meet with sports psychologists to help them cope with the pressures, according to FIFA. In 2007, FIFA ramped up its referee training by launching its Refereeing Assistance Program to prepare the candidates for 2010.
Last week, FIFA announced that two of the 30 referee trios selected to officiate at the World Cup would not be able to take part in the competition, because two assistant referees did not pass the fitness tests. There are no American referees at the tournament this year.
The fitness tests are nerve-wracking, said Hall, the last U.S. referee to officiate a World Cup game.
“Every time I took that fitness test, I didn’t sleep very well the night before,” he said. “You worry about getting injured. You worry the weather isn’t good. The weather makes the test more difficult. Just those little things are factors that can negatively affect you.”
“You’re working so hard because of the pressures of the World Cup,” he said. “You take performance personally and stay close to the play to make the right call. That’s not an easy thing. Again, that’s why you spend so much time training; you take so much pride at coming ‘to the game’ at the highest fitness level possible.”

Memorabilia relating to the Tintin comic books, created by the Belgian author Hergehas, fetched €1.08 million at an auction in Paris, France. It was no surprise as Tintin fans, known as Tintinophiles or Tintinologists depending on their level of involvement, often compete fiercely for any artifact linked to the cartoon hero.
The Tintin adventures were written and illustrated Georges Prosper Remi, whose pen name Herge is the French pronunciation of his initials reversed, RG. Herge’s tales of the intrepid young reporter has sold over 200 million books worldwide since 1929 and a Hollywood movie adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, is expected to be released in 2011.
The highlight of the auction was an original two-page spread of the 1939 comic King Ottokar’s Sceptre, which sold for €243,750, a record for this particular work, according to organisers the Piasa auction house.
“The client is a private Belgian collector. Tintin always returns to Belgium,” said Alain Van Neygher, an agent for the purchaser.
A drawing entitled “Tintin and the shellfish” that Herge made in 1947 for a friend’s 50th birthday sold for €131,250. A bronze statue of Tintin and his faithful fox terrier Milou by Nat Neujean, the first to sculpt the characters much-loved by European readers, went for €125,000, a world record for this artist.

Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger wins the reality TV show Dancing With The Stars Season 10. Olympic skater Evan Lysacek was second while sports reporter Erin Andrews finished in third place.
Nicole thanked her dance partner Derek Hough and said he made her a better person. She spoke to UsMagazine.com about the win, claiming that she has plans to give away the trophy to her mother:
“I’m going to give it to my mom because she’s the reason I really did this show, this is for her!”
Nicole was the frontrunner to win the show, and broke down in tears at the finale when one of the judges suggested that she was always the clear winner of the show. Judge Len Goodman said to her:
“There can only be one winner of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ It should be you.”
“I started to cry right there. For Len to say that? I cried. I may as well have won then whether I got the trophy or not.”
Evan Lysacek was gracious in the losing. “It’s been such a blast. We were totally satisfied with everything we gave in these last few week. And we’re so proud of Nicole and Derek. They worked so hard and they deserve it.”
Erin Andrews, who probably grabbed the most media attention told the host Tom Bergeron after she was eliminated, “I came here under really crummy circumstances, and I just wanted to get my life together and my smile back. I just wanted to be myself again … and you guys have been amazing and my family — and this one [Maksim] — has just put my life back together.”
